MG4 EV Charging Cost and Times (UK, Oct 2026): Home, Rapid and 3-Pin
MG4 EV Charging Cost and Times (UK)
The MG4 EV is one of the most common affordable electric hatchbacks on UK roads, so "how much does it cost to charge?" is a question a lot of owners and would-be owners ask. The answer depends mostly on where you charge, and the gap is large: a full charge at home on an off-peak EV tariff can cost a few pounds, while the same energy from a motorway rapid charger costs several times more.
This guide uses MG's own UK figures for battery size, efficiency and charging times, combined with current UK electricity prices, to give realistic per-charge and per-mile costs.
Figures checked on 6 October 2026. Electricity prices change every quarter and public charging prices vary by network. Put your own numbers into the charging cost calculator.
MG4 battery and charging specs (UK)
All figures in this table are from MG's UK range brochure (MG4 brochure).
| Version | Battery (nominal / usable) | Max DC | WLTP efficiency | WLTP range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SE (standard range) | 49 kWh / not stated | 117 kW | 3.7 mi/kWh | 217 miles |
| SE / Trophy Long Range | 64 kWh / 61.7 kWh | 135 kW | 3.88 mi/kWh | 288 miles |
| Trophy Extended Range | 77 kWh / 74.4 kWh | 144 kW | 3.86 mi/kWh | 329 miles |
| XPOWER | 64 kWh / 61.8 kWh | 140 kW | 3.79 mi/kWh | 279 miles |
The brochure lists a combined Type 2 and CCS charging socket and a 7 kW on-board AC charger, so a 7 kW home wallbox is the natural match.
Official charging times
| Version | 3-pin plug, 10–100% | 7 kW, 10–100% | 50 kW, 10–80% | 150 kW, 10–80% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SE (standard range) | 22.5 h | 7.5 h | 48 min | 37 min |
| Long Range (64 kWh) | 29.5 h | 9.5 h | 52 min | 30 min |
| Extended Range (77 kWh) | 35.5 h | 11.5 h | 61 min | 40 min |
| XPOWER | 29.5 h | 9.5 h | 52 min | 30 min |
Source: MG4 brochure. MG labels the 3-pin times as for emergency use and notes that real-world charging times vary and increase on lower-capacity chargers.
Two takeaways. First, a 3-pin plug is a backup, not a plan: over a day for a 10–100% charge. Second, on a 150 kW charger the Long Range and XPOWER reach 80% in about half an hour, but a 50 kW unit adds roughly 20 minutes, and longer for the Extended Range.
What a charge costs
We use the usable battery capacity where MG publishes it, and ignore charging losses, so real bills will be a little higher. The SE standard range isn't included because MG doesn't state its usable capacity.
Prices used:
- Standard price cap: 26.32p/kWh, the Ofgem cap average for Direct Debit customers from 1 October to 31 December 2026, standing charge not included (Ofgem).
- Off-peak EV tariff: about 8.5p/kWh, as reported by Zapmap (Zapmap).
- Rapid public charging: 77p/kWh, Zapmap's average pay-as-you-go price for 50 kW+ chargers in August 2026 (Zapmap).
| Version | 10–100% at home, price cap | 10–100% at home, off-peak | 10–80% rapid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long Range (61.7 kWh usable) | 55.5 kWh → £14.62 | £4.72 | 43.2 kWh → £33.26 |
| Extended Range (74.4 kWh) | 67.0 kWh → £17.62 | £5.69 | 52.1 kWh → £40.10 |
| XPOWER (61.8 kWh) | 55.6 kWh → £14.64 | £4.73 | 43.3 kWh → £33.31 |
Our calculations: usable capacity × share of battery added × price. Rounded.
Cost per mile
Dividing price by MG's WLTP efficiency gives the energy cost per mile:
| Version | Price cap | Off-peak | Rapid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long Range (3.88 mi/kWh) | 6.8p | 2.2p | 19.8p |
| Extended Range (3.86 mi/kWh) | 6.8p | 2.2p | 19.9p |
| XPOWER (3.79 mi/kWh) | 6.9p | 2.2p | 20.3p |
For comparison, a petrol car using 7.0 litres per 100 km (an example figure, not a specific model) at the UK average unleaded price of 173.46p per litre in the week of 28 September 2026 (DESNZ) costs about 19.5p per mile in fuel.
So an MG4 charged mostly at home is far cheaper to run than that petrol car, but one charged only at rapid chargers costs about the same per mile. That pattern matches our wider look at UK home vs public charging costs.
Remember that WLTP efficiency is a lab figure. Motorway speeds and cold weather both cut real efficiency. Our guide to EV winter range loss explains why, so plan for higher costs per mile in winter.
Charging tips for MG4 owners
- Schedule home charging for the off-peak window. The brochure says the MG app can schedule charging and help find charge points (MG4 brochure). Your wallbox may also have its own timer.
- Plan rapid stops around 10–80%. That's the range MG quotes rapid-charging times for. On a trip, charge enough to reach your next stop rather than filling up, which also limits how much energy you buy at rapid prices.
- Pick the charger power to match the car. The Extended Range peaks at 144 kW, so a 150 kW unit is enough. A faster unit won't charge the car faster than its maximum.
- Treat the 3-pin plug as an emergency option. MG labels it as such, and a 10–100% charge takes 22.5 to 35.5 hours.
- Check the battery-chemistry advice for your version. How full to charge day to day depends on battery type. See LFP vs NMC: should you charge to 100%?
- Use the car as a power source. The brochure lists vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, handy for camping or powering a small appliance.
Work out your own MG4 costs
Open the EV charging cost calculator and enter your MG4's efficiency (it accepts miles/kWh), your tariff, and how much of your charging happens in public. To cost a single session, enter the battery size and your start and end percentages, for example 61.7 kWh from 20% to 80%.
